THE BESNARD LAKES
Formed in 2003 by husband and wife duo Jace Lasek and Olga Goreas in Montreal’s Mile End: a young burgeoning scene of artists and musicians enjoying low rent in the early 2000s.
Moving from Vancouver in 2000, “Oggy” (Olga, originally from Kelowna) and Jace (originally from Regina) set up a small recording studio in Montreal and called it Breakglass after Marcel Duchamp’s broken-glass piece entitled The Bride Stripped Bare By Her Bachelors, Even. After a few years of struggling to get a band off the ground, Oggy and Jace decided to use their new studio to its fullest potential and make a record, just the two of them. The result was their first LP Volume I. After a tour across Canada in 2004, they resumed work in the studio. The resulting material became The Besnard Lakes are the Dark Horse, beginning a 20-plus year journey of music-making and touring. Since then they’ve released multiple studio albums and EPs, been nominated 3 times for the Polaris Prize, been featured in Mojo and Uncut magazines, performed on Jimmy Fallon, and received widespread critical acclaim for their meticulous long-form psychedelic musical experiences. Meeting Kevin Laing in 2004 at a recording session, he would agree to become the band’s long-time drummer and anchor. Sheenah Ko (keys, vocals and vibes) and Gabriel Lambert (guitars), round out the powerhouse that makes this band a thing to behold in a live setting, widely regarded as an ethereal and otherworldly live musical experience. The Besnard Lakes Are Yr Bezzies Mates.
MARK PETERS
Mark Peters is a Wigan-based, Liverpool-born musician and producer who has been releasing music since 2004, when his acclaimed band Engineers signed to The Echo Label. The band's blissful, shoegaze-influenced sound proved a good fit for later member Ulrich Shnauss, who Peters also collaborated with on a trilogy of instrumental albums for Hamburg's Bureau B.
Peters signed with Sonic Cathedral in 2017, releasing 'Innerland' and 'Red Sunset Dreams' (featuring Dot Allison and BJ Cole) and appearing on the label box set Celebrate Yourself! The Sonic Cathedral Story 2004-2024.
Peters has also played support slots over the last decade with many psychedelic exponents, such as Sonic Boom, Damo Suzuki, The Telescopes, and Chapterhouse
